Pharmacy technicians work directly under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. As a pharmacy technician, your general duties may include:
- Transcribing physicians' orders and hospital charts
- Selecting drug products
- Preparing medications for dispensing, labeling, and refill authorization
- Entering patient profiles and information on the computer
You also may assist in quality management procedures and security measures. Other duties may include preparing unit dose medications, intravenous admixtures, and sterile irrigations.

You will also gain practical experience during an externship at an ambulatory clinic that provides infusion services. You can complete your externship at a pharmacy, hospital, or other appropriate health care facility.
