Portrait Photography

Area of Specialization

Learn about the exciting world of portrait photography at Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology. According to the Department of Labor, employment of photographers is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014.* What's more, as the population grows, the demand for portrait photographers should increase as well. Their services are typically requested to photograph coming-of-age events, school pictures, graduations, weddings, and more.

Program Objectives

In this specialty, portrait techniques in camera operation, processing, and finishing are emphasized, as well as merchandising and business practices. Coursework concentrates on current professional trends in studio, on-location, and candid wedding applications. There is also an opportunity to develop your portfolio as you approach graduation. Showing the work that you have done during your studies at OIP&T could help you find entry-level employment as a portrait photographer.

Career Opportunities

When you graduate with your associate's degree in photographic technology with a specialty in portrait photography, you may apply for an entry-level position in a portrait studio. Many photographers are self-employed, but two to five years of work experience is recommended prior to opening your own studio.
